You Can Help Chiropractic To Be Included In Health Care

USCapBuilding

I just received this email from ChiroVoice.org.  Please invest a few minutes and help chiropractic to be included in our health care system.  Thanks!

Earlier this year, we asked you to join the chiropractic patient advocacy network, ChiroVoice.  Why?  Because who better to speak up for the need to protect chiropractic in health care reform than the patients who have actually benefited from chiropractic treatment.

As the health care debate continues in Washington, it is vital that we all continue to remind our legislators that they need to ensure that the freedom to choose chiropractic care as a treatment option is not denied under any national health care reform legislation Congress might enact.

Click here to send a message to Washington that chiropractic is an essential core benefit, and that we cannot achieve a wellness and prevention based-system without guaranteed access to the essential services delivered by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

Thank you!  And from the ChiroVoice team, we wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

Congress Responds To Our Plea

Three weeks ago we sent two envelopes to Congress and one to the Senate.  These envelopes contained the “voices” of many of our patients who desire to see chiropractic included in the new health care reform bill.  Today I received this letter from Allyson Schwartz:

Allyson_Schwartz_Congress_Response_Letter_2009_11_04_11_51_02I would have liked a more detailed response, not just a form letter.  But I suppose we should be happy with any response at all?

Save Your Chiropractic Adjustment

USCapBuilding

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.

President Obama’s health care reform bill is being discussed now and chiropractic needs to be included! Your help is critical in helping get the message to Washington.

Chiropractic care has helped millions of people enjoy freedom from pain and live healthier and happier lives.  Chiropractic care can also help lower health care costs, because it’s far less expensive (and dangerous) than drugs, injections, and surgical procedures.

I encourage you to stand up for your rights and vote to include chiropractic care as a guaranteed benefit in any health care reform bill approved by Congress.

You can help by simply visiting the following site to let your voice be heard:

chirovoice.org

(click on the “Legislative Action Center”)

Please forward this post to anyone you  know who is pro-chiropractic care.

Currently, several prominent pro-chiropractic companies and organizations are working together in an all-out effort to ensure that chiropractic has a voice in this health care reform.

We have a short period of time and we have to act NOW!

Thanks for your support.

Health Care Reform Requires Getting To The Cause

I just finished reviewing some data from the Center for Disease Control that was a real eye opener.  It reported that:

“The medical care costs of people with chronic diseases account for more than 75% of the nation’s $2 trillion medical care costs.”

http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/overview.htm#3

Many (if not most) of these “chronic diseases” are absolutely preventable.  Smoking and bad eating habits account for most of the incidences of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.  Quitting smoking and changing your diet can be difficult, but it is the best choice for superior health.

It appears that much of the problem with our health care system is rooted in corrupt poliltics, insurance company policy, and pharmaceutical company agendas.  There needs to be reform at those levels.  But, if we are going to make some real long-lasting changes to our health care, we need to take prevention and healthy living seriously.  More than ever now, we need to get to the cause of the problem.

A key concept that sets chiropractic apart from the medical approach is:

Chiropractic’s Goal Is To Remove Or Reduce The Cause Of The Problem

When I examine a patient, I am always considering what the cause of the problem is.  If someone visits our office complaining of a body pain, I will seek to discover if their problem is biomechanical in nature (from joints, muscles, or nerves) or not.  If the problem is biomechanical, I can develop a treatment plan that targets the cause and provides a quick and natural solution.  If their problem is not biomechanical (in whole or part), I will refer the patient to an appropriate health care provider.

For the majority of cases, I can find a safe, natural, solution that gets to the cause of the problem.

On the other hand, the typical medical approach to a biomechanical problem is to perform a cursory exam and then provide risky drugs, injections, or surgical procedures.  Chemicals that reduce pain, inflammation, and spasm don’t get to the cause.  They merely treat the symptoms and can actually make things worse in the long run.  The cause remains and the problem lingers.

Why can’t we treat our health care reform crisis with “chiropractic strategy”… and target the cause?

Crossroads in Our Country’s Health Care?

statue_liberty

We are approaching a crossroads in our country’s health care system.  President Obama is pushing Congress to make some major changes by the end of the summer. You can make your voice heard and influence the decision makers.

From ChiroVoice.com…

Health care reform shouldn’t be about politics – instead, the focus should be on ways to keep people well. Currently, our health care system is based on responding to acute problems, urgent needs of patients, and pressing concerns, and as a result we spend minimal time working to prevent illness and disease. Chiropractic, however, focuses on prevention. Not only does your doctor of chiropractic want to keep you pain free, he or she also wants to focus on preventive care, like smoking cessation, eating better and getting more exercise. Without the inclusion of chiropractic care in any reform plan, people will take more medications, undergo more unnecessary surgeries and suffer more pain. That is not a solution.

President Obama has reaffirmed his desire for Congress to pass a comprehensive health care bill by the end of the summer. Now is the time for your elected officials to hear from the people they serve – YOU – that chiropractic is an essential component to any health care plan.

Please encourage your friends and family to join ChiroVoice, and then suggest they contact Congress to share their support for chiropractic.

ChiroVoice is the voice of patients – people like you – who care about real health care reform. Thank you for your continued support.

You have to check out our new page on Chiropractic research.  It’s located in the “Get to Know Us” section on the left side bar.  The research articles cover topics such as validating chiropractic treatment, cost effectiveness of care, your doctor’s education, and more.  Great info for skeptics or for those who just love to learn.  I’m planning on keeping current with the latest chiropractic research and making frequent updates to the research  page.

Insurance Update

It’s amazing to think that we have been at our “new” office location for over three years now! We’d like to thank you for your support through it all.

We know that you’ve been enjoying benefits of our integrated practice – receiving chiropractic care along with therapeutic massage for some time now. And we’d like that to continue even though the current insurance climate (regulation changes, increasing co-pays, huge deductibles, delayed payments, etc.) has forced us to change our billing procedures…

As of June 1, 2009 we will no longer be able to bill your insurance for massage services performed by our therapists. Therefore, you will be responsible for our office charges for any massage services you receive.

But as you know, we’ve always tried to provide affordable services. To that end, we’ve designed very reasonable massage plans that allow you to enjoy 30-minute sessions for as little as $19.50! For details about our massage plans check out our posted fee schedule, shoot us an email, or give us a call and we’ll be happy to speak with you.

We feel honored for your continued trust in us for your natural health care. We hope to see you soon and are looking forward to continuing to work with you for many years to come.

Avoid Cancer With Healthy Living

woman-eating-strawberry

If you wonder how much your lifestyle affects your health, you have to read this article.  According to this latest research, diet appears to be the most influential factor in regards to cancer.

LONDON (Reuters) – Healthier living could prevent about a third of the most common cancers in rich countries and about a quarter in poorer ones, international researchers said on Thursday.

Better diets, more exercise and controlling weight could also prevent more than 40 percent of colon and breast cancer cases in some countries, according to the study which urged governments and individuals to do more to cut the number of global cancer deaths each year.

“At the time of publication, roughly 11 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cancer and nearly eight million people die from cancer each year,” said Michael Marmot, who led the study from the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research.

“However, cancer is mostly preventable.”

The study involved 23 experts who analyzed both the incidence of 12 common cancers across the world and data on diet, exercise and weight to see how these factors contributed to kidney, mouth, lung, gallbladder and the other cancers.

The researchers found that healthier living would prevent 43 percent of colon cancer cases and 42 percent of breast cancer cases in Britain, and 45 percent of bowel cancer and 38 percent of breast cancer cases in the United States.

The findings follow the same groups’ study in 2007 that showed how quickly people grow and what they eat are both significant causes of cancer.

They recommended — in line with what health experts, including governments and the U.N. World Health Organization, have long been advising — that people follow diets based on fruits, vegetables and whole grains and go easy on red meats, dairy products and fats.

The team also looked at China and Brazil as representatives of low- and middle-income countries, respectively.

Overall improving diet, exercise and weight would in the United States prevent more than a third of the 12 most common cancers — which also included stomach, womb (uterus), prostate, pancreas and esophagus tumors.

This amounted to 39 percent of the cancers in Britain, 30 percent in Brazil and 27 percent in China.

“This report shows that by making relatively straightforward changes, we could significantly reduce the number of cancer cases around the world,” Marmot said in a statement.

“On a global level every year, there are millions of cancer cases that could have been prevented and this is why we need to act now before the situation gets even worse.”

http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSTRE51P2P920090226

The lesson here: if you want to have superior health, you must have a healthy lifestyle, which should include a whole-food plant-based diet.  A healthy lifestyle also should include regular moderate exercise, stress management, and getting sufficient rest among other things.

Many of our patients include regular chiropractic checkups and massage therapy as part of their healthy lifestyle because they know that it contributes to their health and well-being!

Health and Wellness Expo Update

This past Saturday, Christine and I had the privilege of participating in a local health & wellness expo at Lower Moreland High School.  I arrived with Christine at around 8:00 am and we had our table setup and equipment ready by 9:00.  We were accompanied by many other vendors.  There were health club reps, massage therapists, a raw food chef, personal trainers, weight loss consultants, health food stores, martial arts schools and more.

I was told that hundreds of runners showed up for the annual 5K run.  After the run, many curious energetic and people filled the school gymnasium.

I provided free spinal/scoliosis screenings and digital foot scans/posture analysis.  Christine did a great job as a greeter and kept very busy providing free 5-minute massages.

We worked practically non-stop from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, and were able to meet people of all ages from the community.  We really stirred up a great deal of interest with the digital scanner technology.

It was a real pleasure to spend time one-on-one with so many people curious about their health.  I performed around 30 digital scans on the young and old.  Several of the runners from the 5K run were concerned about the condition of their feet.  Using the digital foot scanner and some pictures, I was able to explain the direct relationship between the biomechanical condition of the arches of their feet and the rest of their skeleton.

Please let us know if there are any health expos or health fairs in your community… we’d love to help out!  Until then, we’re looking forward to the next one!

Thanks to all friends, family, and patients who supported us.  We greatly appreciate you!

Protect Your Access To Chiropractic

statue_liberty

I just discovered a site by the ACA (American Chiropractic Association) that seems to be taking some good steps to fight for your freedom to have access to chiropractic in the new proposed national health care system.  Get involved.  Every voice counts.

From www.ChiroVoice.org

The chiropractic advocacy network is a dedicated group of national volunteers who educate policymakers about the value of chiropractic and work to positively impact any legislative efforts to reform the current national health care system. Through the chiropractic advocacy network, patients and chiropractic supporters can stay informed about important health care issues and help ensure that:

  • Congress does not restrict your ability to access essential chiropractic services.
  • Congress does not limit – but instead expands – coverage for services provided by Doctors of Chiropractic within Medicare.
  • Insurance and managed care companies do not deny patients’ access to the essential chiropractic services they need.

Your involvement makes a tremendous difference.
Each active member of the chiropractic advocacy network brings us one step closer to our goal of assuring full-scope access to chiropractic services. Chiropractic patients and supporters who are interested in serving as advocates may sign-up to receive special e-mail alerts about advocacy issues and important legislation. Network members will also receive a monthly e-newsletter.

Announcing New Digital Foot Scanner Technology

associateplatinum

I am pleased to announce the addition of the Foot Levelers Associate™ Platinum to our wellness practice.  A tool that will allow me to make a digital scan of the feet.  The Associate™ Platinum will help me efficiently and accurately screen for imbalances that contribute to problems in any number of places, like your knees, hips, and low back — even if your feet don’t hurt. It’s amazing what your feet can tell you about your spinal health!

colorfootscanimbalancedskeleton

Your feet are the foundation for your entire body. Like any structure, your body’s foundation must be balanced to properly support the weight above it. If your arches in one or both of your feet collapse, your body doesn’t get the correct postural support, causing an imbalance in your skeletal frame.

The Associate™ Platinum digital scanner will help me develop more precise care plans and use postural support, like custom-made orthotics from Foot Levelers, to obtain positive results in nearly everyone — from children to seniors.

I would like to welcome new patients to visit our wellness center in Huntingdon Valley for postural exams to determine their chiropractic needs. Our wellness center offers a variety of natural therapies for total body health and would be willing to provide on-site screenings with the Associate™ Platinum at health fairs and other community events.

If you’ve never had your feet scanned, you probably don’t know what they are supposed to look like. Don’t wait for aches and pains to tell you there’s a problem.

Call us now to schedule an appointment, and learn how your feet can affect your health!  Your entire body will thank you!

Your Amazing Body

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to speak to a small group of homeschoolers about our body’s joints.  We talked about the differences between fibrous joints, cartilaginous joints, and synovial joints.  We looked at the differing joint shapes and functions and compared them to real life examples.  Overall, I really tried to open their eyes and have them experience a sense of wonder as we investigated the body’s joints.

Then it got me thinking.  How often do we stand back in wonder about our own bodies?  When was the last time you stopped to think about just how amazing your body is?

It’s an extremely complicated and highly-organized “machine”.  In your busy life, you’ve probably become fairly good at multitasking.  But could you multitask 10 things at once?  How about 10,000?  Thankfully your body does an incredible job multitasking millions of functions at the same time. Take a minute to think about all the things your body does, without your help at all…

When you were first given life, you had nothing to do with your growth in your mother’s womb.  You started as a single cell and then grew to become a fully functioning baby.  All your parts “appeared” at the right time, in the right place, and grew to the right size.  First your brain and spinal cord form, then the heart and circulatory system, which begins beating at around 3 weeks!  Over the next few weeks, your body was woven together cells, tissues, organs, systems, bones, joints, muscles and skin.

All your limbs grew at the right time and to the right size.  It’s incredible if you stop and think about it.You eat food every day without having to produce the right enzymes to digest your meals.  Let alone managing the complex biochemistry needed to break the food down into your bloodstream to nourish all your body’s cells.

Your bodies is amazing and complex.  And if you think deeply about it, demonstrates the awesome wisdom, creativity, and love of your creator.

Health Spending Accounts Give Flexibility But Time is Running Out

Here’s a quick reminder as we approach year’s end… this may be the perfect time to use your Health Spending Account (HSA). Generally, money left in your HSA will NOT carry over to the next year. It would be wise to make any health-related purchases before the end of 2008.

You may be able to use your HSA for various services and products such as:

  • Chiropractic and Massage Therapy
  • Spinal Pelvic Stabilizers (orthotics)
  • Cervical Support Pillows
  • Nutritional Products
  • Wraps and Supports
  • Home Rehabilitation Equipment
  • Home Spinal Traction Devices

Typically HSAs can be used for any healthcare products or services for a calendar year. The patient determines how much money goes into his or her account at the beginning of the year, and that amount must be spent or it will be lost.

According to the U.S. Department if Treasury, less than 500,000 Americans were enrolled in an HSA plan in 2004. Now more than 3.2 million Americans use them. Some experts predict this number to grow to 14 million by the year 2010.

Dr. Ken Goldman Attends 15-Hour Training Seminar in Dallas

Last weekend I had the privilege of training with one of the top chiropractors in the country, Dr. Mark Charrette. I had to fly out of the Philly airport on Friday, and everything was going as planned until I boarded the plane.

Our flight out of Philadelphia was delayed by an hour as there was a security “issue” on the runway. While our plane was waiting for around 30 minutes, I glanced out the window and saw a police officer unload a police dog and jog toward the terminal. Soon after, two police officers entered our plane and slowly walked down the aisle as they scanned each face and compared it to a picture they carried. They left the plane without incident.

I wasn’t happy for the delay, but was thankful for the top-notch security in place. Our flight was given the okay and we took off. From that point onward, the flight was uneventful and we landed safely at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport.

It was strange traveling alone, without Laura and our four children. But the next day I was soon surrounded by so many skilled doctors and kept so busy, that the time passed rather quickly.

The focus of our training was on whole-body adjusting – a holistic approach to patient care. Some of the time was spent reviewing anatomy, biomechanics, and neurology. But most of the time was spent practicing the whole-body adjusting techniques.

We reviewed the protocols for:

  • the foot and ankle
  • the knee
  • the hip
  • the jaw
  • the hand and wrist
  • the elbow
  • the shoulder
  • the ribs

As you may know, I’ve been doing whole-body adjusting for several years now. Even so, I was able to “fine tune” my techniques and really become more confident in the whole-body holistic approach to patient care. As many of you have experienced at Spectrum Wellness, we take an integrative approach to care. You may have experienced massage therapy, nutritional counseling, exercise rehab, and other natural therapies in your care plan.

Because of my additional training we are now better able to handle many different body conditions not typically handled in a natural way. We can help various conditions including:

  • neck pain and headaches
  • shoulder and rotator cuff injuries
  • chronic back pain and instability
  • chronic knee pain
  • plantar fasciitis
  • TMJ dysfunction and pain
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • tennis elbow
  • leg length inequality and pelvic dysfunction
  • postural abnormalities

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call any time. I set aside time each week for phone interviews, and would be happy to speak with you to discuss your condition and go over some of your options.

I had some free time on Sunday and had lunch in the hotel lounge, and was able to sample a variety of “Tex Mex” food. I was greeted by many friendly people, including several Dallas Cowboy fans wearing ten-gallon hats.

I was very thankful that the return flight went perfectly.  I was even blessed when our plane flew by Citizens Park at around 9:55 PM, and I got a bird’s-eye glimpse of game 3 of the World Series.  The Phillies ended up beating the Rays 5-4 that night.

I arrived home tired, both mentally and physically.  Overall, I had an enjoyable and very productive time. I can’t wait to see you in our center soon!

Dr. Ken Goldman Attends 12-Hour Seminar – Whole Body Adjusting For Whole Body Health

I just finished a 12-hour seminar focusing on whole-body adjusting. It was held in the heart of Philadelphia, just 2 blocks from city hall. The seminar was taught by a veteran chiropractor, Dr. Mark Charrette. He always has excellent and practical information to share, and delivers it with lots of energy and a “spicy” sense of humor. I have been a student of Dr. Mark Charrette since attending one of his seminars nearly a decade ago.

Over the weekend, we covered treatment strategies and extremity adjusting protocols for the whole body. During the lectures, I learned some amazingly simple, yet powerful strategies for patient care. I even had several opportunities during the hands-on sessions to practice and fine-tune my techniques.

Dr. Charrette detailed the ASR strategy for patient care. This stands for ADJUST – SUPPORT – REHAB. Over the years, I’ve learned that by following this simple strategy for patient care, I can help my patients achieve superior health faster and with fewer setbacks. The following example may help to illustrate this…

Sally, a 45-year old woman, comes in to see me with lower back pain and hip-area pain. I would start with a detailed case history and exam. I gather a great deal of helpful information here and can then determine if care is appropriate and safe, and what course we should take. I typically start with ADJUSTments of the spine and then the extremities. In Sally’s case we would focus on her lower extremity – the feet, ankles, knees, and hips. We may do other therapies such as ice, electrical stimulation or massage therapy. To SUPPORT Sally’s body, I may wrap the area (foot, ankle or knee) and determine the need for arch supports (orthotics). I would then design a program (for office and home) of targeted REHAB exercises for Sally, that would help provide long-lasting relief and improved body function.

I hope that example gives you a better idea of how I “give life” to the ASR strategy in my practice. By hitting all three components and focusing on whole-body balance, I provide the best care possible. You can see that if one of the components is neglected, you have a reduced likelihood of a good outcome.

As you may know, I have been doing whole-body adjustments (foot, ankle, knee, hip, wrist, elbow, shoulder and jaw) for many years now. Many chiropractors don’t address whole body balance. Perhaps due to lack of training, or different philosophies, or not wanting to spend the time with each patient. But when I first started focusing on whole body balance, I began to get great results. Now the research keeps coming in and continues to validate this “style” of chiropractic wellness care.  I’m hooked!

I can’t wait to share some of the incredible things I learned at the seminar. If you have any questions about my whole-body adjusting technique, feel free to call me or email any time.
