What is Therapeutic Massage

Massage therapy is a science and an art, with touch as the key ingredient. Our practitioners have learned a variety of specific techniques for massage. They use their sense of touch to determine the right amount of pressure to apply to each person and to locate areas of tension and other soft-tissue problems. Touch also conveys a sense of caring, an important component in the healing relationship.

The core goal of massage therapy is to help the body heal itself and to increase health and well-being.

When muscles are overworked, waste products such as lactic acid can accumulate in the muscle, causing soreness, stiffness, and even muscle spasm. Massage improves circulation, which increases blood flow, bringing fresh oxygen to body tissues. This can assist the elimination of waste products, speed healing after injury, and enhance recovery from disease.

Therapeutic massage can be used to promote general well-being while boosting the circulatory and immune systems to benefit blood pressure, circulation, muscle tone, digestion, and skin tone. Massage has been incorporated into many health systems, and different techniques have been developed and integrated into various complementary therapies.

Our Massage Techniques

SWEDISH MASSAGE is used by our therapists to administer soothing, tapping and kneading strokes to work the entire body, relieving muscle tension and loosening sore joints. Our therapists are highly skilled in using five basic Swedish massage strokes very effectively. They are effleurage (stroking); petrissage (muscles are lightly grabbed and lifted); friction (thumbs and fingertips work in deep circles into the thickest part of muscles; tapotement (chopping, beating, and tapping strokes); and vibration (fingers are pressed or flattened firmly on a muscle, then the area is shaken rapidly for a few seconds).

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the surface of your body. You have five layers of muscle in your back, for instance, and while Swedish massage may help the first couple of layers, it won’t do much directly for the muscle underneath. Deep muscle techniques usually involve slow strokes and direct pressure or friction movements that go across the grain of the muscles. Our massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure.

PRENATAL MASSAGE shares many of the goals of regular massage — to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and just make you feel good. But it’s also tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies, and our therapists know how to adjust their techniques accordingly. Massages can be done side-lying or face-down with the use of special pregnancy pillows. Your comfort is our priority.

HOT STONE MASSAGE is extremely relaxing and therapeutic as the stones are used in two ways during the massage. One is to impart heat onto the body by laying stones under the client with a towel between the client and stone and/or on top of the client, again upon a towel. The stones are typically placed along the spine, on the legs, on the hands and on the arms. The stones become concentrated centers of heat while the therapist is simultaneously massaging the client with oiled, heated stones held in the palm of the hand. The therapist will use firm strokes along the muscles of the legs, arms, and torso areas. Our therapists don’t simply “glide” the heated stones lightly upon the surface of the skin, but rather the stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to the client. The client can request light, medium or deep pressure, which is the beauty of the hot stone massage technique. It can be customized in an instant to the request of the client. The heat from the stones relaxes muscles, increase the blood flow to the area being worked on which further accelerates the healing process. This increase in circulation and the relaxation of the muscles also aids in mental relaxation.

INFANT MASSAGE CLASSES are being taught by our skilled massage therapists. Early psychological development of infants is directly tied to bonding and touch. Infant massage can be seen as a preventative natural therapy from the earliest stages of life. Understanding the importance if touch and beginning significant touch early in your baby’s life will improve the quality of life for both you and your baby. Infant massage is an excellent way to promote well-being and is the perfect alternative to medicine and drugs by aiding your baby’s immune system.  The “BabyBabyOhBaby” DVD are also being sold in the office to provide clients with support and more opportunities to learn infant massage.
